About OceanFarewell
Published by Kontio Power, LLC — connecting families with licensed ocean burial providers across the United States and around the world.
Our Mission
OceanFarewell exists because planning a burial at sea can feel overwhelming — especially for families in grief who don't know where to start, what the rules are, or whether the providers they find online are legitimate. Our mission is simple: make it easy for families to find trustworthy, EPA-compliant burial at sea providers and understand their options.
We believe that returning a loved one to the ocean is a profound and deeply personal act — and that families deserve accurate information, honest pricing, and access to qualified professionals without having to navigate a maze of unverified websites and uncertain credentials.
OceanFarewell is a directory and informational resource. We are not a licensed funeral provider. We do not conduct burial at sea services ourselves. We connect families with the licensed operators who do.
What We Cover
OceanFarewell covers burial at sea across the United States and four major international markets:
- United States: State-by-state guides covering California, Florida, New York, Texas, Hawaii, Washington, and more. Legal requirements, provider listings, and local city guides for major departure ports.
- United Kingdom: MMO licensing, England's three designated burial grounds, ash scattering rules, and Scotland/Wales variations.
- Australia: State-by-state framework — NSW, Queensland, Victoria, and WA. AMSA vessel requirements and EPBC Act implications.
- Canada: BC coast, Nova Scotia, provincial vital statistics rules, and freshwater lake scattering in Ontario.
- New Zealand: Health Act, Resource Management Act, Māori cultural considerations, and Auckland/Wellington/Canterbury providers.
Our Guides section covers the how-it-works process, pricing, legal framework, and product recommendations (biodegradable urns and eco memorial options).
How We Research Our Content
OceanFarewell is an independent informational resource. Every guide and state page is researched from primary sources — including the US EPA, the UK Marine Management Organisation, Transport Canada, and state funeral and health agencies — and written to explain the laws, costs, and process in plain language. We do not sell services or take bookings; our goal is simply to help families understand their options before they approach a licensed provider.
Editorial Standards
All information published on OceanFarewell is researched and written with accuracy as the primary goal. We follow these editorial standards:
- Legal accuracy: We source burial at sea legal information directly from EPA regulations (MPRSA, 40 CFR Part 229), state agency websites, and international regulatory bodies (MMO, AMSA, Transport Canada). We do not publish legal opinions; we relay publicly available regulatory information.
- Provider verification intent: Our directory currently includes placeholder provider listings as the site launches. Before going live with specific provider names and contact details, we verify USCG captain licenses, state funeral home licensing, and EPA compliance procedures.
- No paid editorial: Provider listings are not bought-and-paid endorsements. We do not guarantee provider quality, availability, or pricing. Families are always encouraged to independently verify provider credentials.
- Up-to-date information: Burial at sea regulations change. We review and update our content regularly. Page publication dates and update dates are noted on articles.
